5 Fresh Tips to help you navigate life like Nora Ephron:

  1. As we approach the cozy fall season, the warmth of the late great filmmaker Nora Ephron often feels sorely missed. One key way we can all embrace Nora's philosophy on life is by embracing change. One of her most beloved films, "You've Got Mail," is about just that: remembering how things used to be, cherishing those memories, and also coming to terms with the fact that change is inevitable...and can be the very thing that provides us a fresh start in life and love.

  2. Nora was famous for writing about her divorce in "Heartburn," the bestselling novel published in 1983 which subsequently became a film directed by Mike Nichols. In the book, she included recipes, and talked often about how food could be a connection to the past and a way of traveling back in time to a place that felt safe and warm. Consider which foods and recipes help remind you of "home" or family, and make sure they're included in your self-care routine.

  3. Read more books! Nora was a lover of words from a young age. Her mother brought home treasured editions of iconic books to her and her sisters and once she was a teenager, she'd ride her bicycle to the Beverly Hills Library to check out books as often as possible. Research shows that just six minutes of reading a day can provide numerous mental health benefits.

  4. Write more letters. Whether it’s writing to your congresswoman, or simply telling your Mom, sister, or best friend why they matter, you’ll both get an instant boost of much-needed dopamine. Bonus points for sending it in the postal mail and using real stationery.

  5. Don't skimp on the bath oil. Nora was devoted to finding the best of everything and sharing it with those she loved. But like her on-screen alter ego, Sally Albright in When Harry Met Sally, she always had very specific ways of making modifications to get things just right. When it came to her favorite lemon-scented bath oil, she found that the recommended amount wasn't quite enough -- "it gets you nowhere," she said. Instead, she was fond of asking for "double the walnuts" on a salad, doubling the bath oil, and, importantly, ordering more than one dessert. Don't be afraid to embrace the things that bring you joy -- and to ask for a little extra when necessary.
