Reviews from Joanna’s Book “Parent Fatigue Syndrome”
"I am one of the parents who has been fortunate enough to have Dr. Hulton work with my child. As a new parent whose child fell on the autism spectrum, I was alone with few answers. For years, Dr. Hulton used her special brand of compassionate therapy to bring my child out of his shell. She worked with us as an entire family, as opposed to focusing on one person. Now, with this book, she shares her thoughtful and empathetic techniques through stories that will ring true to so many parents, as well as concise and clear steps one can take to achieve more effective parenting. Dr. Hulton also cites a wealth of resources for parents that want to reach beyond this one book. Not only is this a wonderful book for parents looking for answers, but it is a very important guide for those of us who have questions about our own upbringing, and are looking to recognize patterns of behavior (positive and negative). She helps parents look for our own "triggers" and "history" so we are not doomed to repeat it with our own children. This is simply a must have book for anyone with children, or anyone trying to understand their inner child."
Parent Fatigue Syndrome is a treasure trove of wisdom in which gifted psychoanalyst and child-centered play therapist Dr. Joanna Hulton shares her conceptually clear and open-hearted approach to overcoming parenting challenges in today's world. Dr. Hulton masterfully outlines core concepts of child development theory and Kohutian Self-Psychology in accessible and jargon-free language. With rich clinical illustrations Hulton teaches us the importance of recognizing how “conventional wisdom” regarding parenting practices is long overdue for a major overhaul. We learn ways to help a child effectively navigate major developmental milestones, as well as the power of play therapy to illuminate family dynamics and resolve traumatic loss. This is that special book you will want to pass along to clients, friends and colleagues and share with your children as they become parents! Ultimately, Hulton's greatest gift to the reader is her message that instilling empathy in our children will save the world.
This is a really wonderful book, and I feel fortunate to read this as a first-time mom of a 10-month-old. Dr. Hulton thoughtfully analyzes the case studies in each chapter, introducing us to the family members and the sensitive solution(s) she uses to resolve the situation. It's also interesting to read how we parent the way we do, and how our past experiences and behaviors may directly affect how we approach a parenting problem. Dr. Hulton's compassionate and sensitive approach is inspiring and my husband I found this book to be a helpful guide as we continue to navigate first-time parenting issues.
