It’s Time to Celebrate Yourself This Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a holiday all about love - but who says it has to be about loving someone else? Here at Fresh Starts, we are all about celebrating yourself for every holiday, Valentine’s Day included! So, we asked some of our friends what they’d recommend getting for yourself this Valentine’s Day, and we included our gift picks below, too!
How will you celebrate yourself this Valentine’s Day?
As divorce coach Kara Francis says: Celebrating Valentine's Day tends to be about material things, like gifts or going to a restaurant for a romantic dinner. While there's nothing wrong with that, I would challenge you to show yourself love in a different way that doesn't involve another person. Spend some time connecting with your body. Some simple ways to do this:
Bath It Up: Take a bath, and romanticize the s*** out of that bath! Use some salts, light a candle, find a relaxing playlist, meditation or breathwork exercise to play, etc. Feel how your body reacts as you slide into the warm water and how the water envelops and holds you.
Walk It Out: Take a walk outside and observe your surroundings while you give your brain a break. Even better: pair with a walking meditation to further connect with your body.
Move It: Do some yoga or full body stretching. Don't judge your body for the way it finds balance or its ability to lengthen and stretch. Show it kindness and love, and meet your body where it's at.
Here’s how some of our Fresh Start friends are celebrating themselves this Valentine’s Day:
“I say do one thing for yourself that you’ve been putting off.” - Jamie Stone
“Burn the fancy candles. Write in the pretty notebooks. Wear the nice pajamas. Eat off your fine china and sip your favorite beverage from your crystal glasses. Don't wait for that hypothetical one day to use these things - today is that day, and you deserve it.” - Hitha Palepu
“If you’re a parent, it may be hard or impossible to do a date (solo or with partner) on actual Valentine’s Day. Find another time to take yourself out—whether for a favorite fancy coffee before starting work or a shopping trip to splurge on a top you’ve been eyeing—and have a small “win” for your day! I know I get FOMO easily so having a lil treat helps.” - Maria West
“When I was in college and feeling very down about Valentine's Day, one of my friends shared that in Mexico, where she is from, Valentine's Day is the day of "amor y amistad," love and friendship. I've carried that with me ever since and try to make the day about celebrating all the forms of love in my life. Whether you're in a romantic relationship or not, it never hurts to lean into all kinds of love, especially self love. And I support buying yourself (and your friends) flowers any day of the year.” - Abigail Koffler
“I celebrate myself by doing things I love to do like play piano or take a dance class.” - Alexis Barad-Cutler
“Don't just find time to read in between the cracks of your life. Set aside time. Book time. Block it out. Find childcare just to celebrate yourself. It's important.” - Laura Danger
“Just pause, really, stop everything...place your hand over your heart, take a breath softly and whisper ‘everything is okay and I love you.’” - Susan Gold
“Sensuality, lingerie, chocolate, flowers and candles are all things that should be enjoyed in life - with or without a partner!” - Kate Sisk
